According to recent studies, autism occurs at the approximate rate of one or two cases per 1,000 in the population. An organization called The Autism Council for Education and Scientific Study is dedicated to informing the community about autism and supporting research efforts to better understand Autism Spectrum Disorders. The Autism Council for Education and Scientific Study includes parents of children with autism and also professionals, such as physicians, educators, and therapists, who work with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Early intervention can help children gain self-care, social, and communication skills. The Community Recital Series continues in 2010. February 21st, at 3:00 pm, pianist Rev. Hector Reynoso of El Principe De Paz Church in Mercedes will present a concert. March 14th, three Bell Choirs will perform during the Bell Choir Festival at First Presbyterian Church in Mission. April 18th, Chancel Choir Bass Soloist Daymon Passmore will perform. Veterans of the US Navy Submarine Service meet for lunch, starting at 11:00 am, on the third Wednesday of the month, through March, at Ann’s Restaurant in San Juan. At the Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum an exhibit, on loan from the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky, called "Burgoyne Surrounded" continues until March 14th. The Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum is located on 2425 Boxwood Street, across from Texas State Technical College in Harlingen. Auditions for the Fourth Annual Texas Folklife "Big Squeeze" accordion contest will be held throughout Texas. The "Big Squeeze" accordion contest is open to non-professional musicians 21 years of age or younger. Finalists will perform at the Texas Folklife "Accordion Kings & Queens Festival", to be held at the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Houston on June 5th, 2010. Locations for the "Big Squeeze" 2010 auditions, which will be held through April 3rd, include: San Antonio; Austin; Dallas; Schulenburg; Houston and San Angelo. In San Benito, Texas Independence Day celebrations are slated for February 26th and 27th at the Plaza San Benito, across the street from the Old Stone Wall Jackson Hotel, on Stenger Street. Texas Independence Day activities begin on February 26th with the Texas History Symposium. The Symposium will feature noted Texas historians, Dr. Jesus de la Teja, Dr. Ana Carolina Castillo Crimm, and Dr. Stephen L. Hardin. Texas Independence Day activities in San Benito continue on February 27th with a horseback riders parade; Texas Independence Day proclamation; battle re-enactments and Native American history demonstrations. Battle re-enactors with period uniforms, equipment and weapons will be available for photo opportunities. For more information call (956) 245 6980. Census Day 2010 is April 1st. The United States Constitution requires a census every 10 years and it will be used to determine the number of seats in the House of Representatives for each state. An accurate census count is also important because community leaders use census data to plan for allocation of health care services, construction of schools, recreational facilities and roads. The 2010 census form is limited to 10 questions. Census forms will be mailed or delivered to households in March, 2010. Starting in May, census workers will visit households that did not return a questionnaire. Recruitment for census workers continues and you may call (866) 861 2010 to apply as a census worker. In Harlingen, Hope Medical Missions has organized several trips to offer much needed volunteer medical services to the victims of the recent earthquake devastation in Haiti. On February 19th, The Marine Military Academy Corps of Cadets presents The Iwo Jima Parade at the Marine Military Academy Parade Grounds in Harlingen. Parade Day events begin at 10:00 am with special video showings and a book signing by the author of “Life Interrupted by War”. The Iwo Jima Parade starts at 4:00 pm. It will be performed at the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium on Saturday, March 20 8PM and at the McAllen Civic Center on Saturday March 27, 8PM. Los Caminos del Rio, is a local non-profit that works for the preservation of the environment and cultural heritage of the Rio Grande Valley. Begun in 1991, the group's mission has evolved from purely historical preservation into a powerful force that's changing how people view the Rio Grande and the Rio Grande Valley. Los Caminos is offering free use of a kayak to anyone who wants to represent the Valley in the Buffalo Bayou Regatta, Texas's biggest canoe and kayak race in Houston, Texas this coming Saturday March 13. In Edinburg, the Juvenile Court Conference Committee Volunteer Program is recruiting adult volunteers from the community to work with first-time juvenile offenders and their families. Volunteers help at-risk youth and their parents by offering them options to improve their behavior. A volunteer training session will be held March 6th, from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm at the Juvenile Court Conference Committee Conference Room of the Judge Mario E. Ramirez Jr. Juvenile Justice Center.
