The Brownsville Historical Association invites the public to learn the art of reading Tarot cards on August 7 during the Victorian Tarot Workshop. Operation Lone Star will offer free health clinics during its annual two-week effort to provide health services to people in South Texas. Free services include health screenings, immunizations, physicals for students, hearing and vision exams, and limited dental care. Last year Operation Lone Star provided medical services to more than 12,000 residents. Clinic sites, in Cameron, Hidalgo and Starr Counties, will provide care from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. At Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park in Mission, enjoy watching as many as 60 meteors per hour shoot across the night sky during the Fourth Annual Perseid Meteor Shower Party on August 12th, from 8:00pm to Midnight. The Perseid Meteor Shower Party also includes night hikes, live animals, and special viewing areas to see the Perseid Meteor Shower. The Perseid Meteor Shower, one of the most consistently active meteor showers of the year, occurs from mid-July to early August. The Perseid Meteor Shower Party is a family friendly event. In Harlingen, the next meeting of the Valley Byliners, a support group for new and aspiring writers, has been scheduled for 2:00 pm, August 14th at the Harlingen Public Library. A Valley Byliner book signing has been scheduled in Harlingen on August 7th at Books and Things, 523 North First Street. The Texas Inmate Families Association Monthly Support Group meets on the last Wednesday of every month in San Benito, at the START Center, 743 North Sam Houston Boulevard. The Texas Inmate Families Association (TIFA) members are united in support of families affected by the incarceration of a loved one in the Texas criminal justice system. The Texas Inmate Families Association is also dedicated to improving the conditions and life chances of Texas inmates.
