"The Radio For Sister Bear"
Written and Illustrated by Sherry A. Hurtado
Once upon a time in a sunny dirt road there lived a bear family. Sister Bear wanted a radio for herself. But Papa Bear didn’t have much money to buy Sister Bear a radio for herself. So Sister Bear went running to the kitchen where Mama Bear was and demanded, “Mama, I want a radio for myself! Brother has a radio. Why can’t I have one, too?
Brother Bear heard their discussion and said to his sister, “You’re too young to have a radio for you only.” Then Mama Bear said, “Go to your room Brother.”
Sister Bear walked to the garden and said, “Papa, Mama is going to have a discussion with you and me.” Papa stopped working and walked with Sister Bear into the house to the kitchen. Mama and Papa said to Sister Bear, “We don’t have much money to buy you a radio for Christmas.” Then Sister Bear said to them, “What can I do to get money for a radio?”
On Saturday morning, Sister Bear woke up and walked into the kitchen for breakfast. Mama was waiting for Sister to eat breakfast. She remembered their conversation the night before. She asked Sister Bear, “Have you decided what to make?” Sister Bear thought for a moment and the she got and idea, “I know! Bracelets!” “How much will you sell them for?” mom asked. “I’ll sell them for 10 cents each! Mama Bear said, “Wow!”
Mama and Papa had an idea and said, “You can make some things and then sell them for any prize.” It was night and the Bear Family was sitting beside the warm fire. Sister Bear was thinking about what she could make to earn money. Sister asked Mama, “What can I do to make the money?” Brother Bear interrupted and said, “What are you going to do if you don’t know how to make anything at all?” Mama Bear heard what Brother Bear said. Mama Bear said, “Sister Bear can do anything she wants to.” Then they Bear family went to sleep.
Sister Bear walked outside and started working on the stand. Next she started to make her bracelets. She made pink ribbon bracelets with roses, yellow bracelets with daisies, and green leaf bracelets with pretty white flowers. She placed them on the stand with a sign that read: Bracelets Only 10 cents.
On Sunday morning Sister Bear ate breakfast and left the house. She went to the store to buy the radio. Sister Bear went home and listened to the music that she liked to hear all by herself.
Soon it was night and the Bear Family was sitting beside the fire drinking hot chocolate. Mama Bear asked Sister Bear how much money she had made. Sister Bear said she had made $20. Brother Bear was astonished when he hear Sister Bear say that.
